May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. - Psalm 19:14 (NIV)
As I was driving back home after meeting with a good friend, I noticed a small crack in my windshield. At first I didn’t pay much attention to it, but by the next day it had spread significantly into my field of vision. Now I was feeling really worried!
As I stared at the now very visible damage in my windshield, I made a connection to the topic of my women’s Bible study. We had been discussing speech and how we use words in our daily interactions with others. Just like the crack in my windshield, what starts as something small — a little gossip, white lie, or seemingly innocent speculation about someone — can quickly escalate and have lasting consequences.
James 3:5 warns us: “Even though the tongue is a small part of the body, it boasts wildly. Think about this: A small flame can set a whole forest on fire” (CEB). As Jesus’ disciples, don’t we want our words to spark love and compassion? Let us remember to honor our heavenly Father with our words and always lift each other up.
With God’s guidance, I can use my words to bless others.
