Hearing Lucy sing brought back memories of a little girl who, almost fifty years ago, stood solo in front of our church congregation joyfully singing “Jesus Loves Me.” I was brave back then. But somewhere along the way, that light dimmed and I was consumed with baggage like worry, fear, and low self-esteem as I navigated through life’s struggles in my own strength.
At the time I wrote my meditation, “Let Your Light Shine,” I was battling job loss, the recent death of my mom, and many other trials. I hit rock bottom and found myself clinging heavily to my faith in God. Music, praise, worship, and Bible verses were lifelines in my healing process. By drawing closer to God and God’s strength, I discovered the peace I needed to carry me through those tough times. I also experienced unexpected blessings in the middle of my difficulties.
Lucy and the other children in my church were among those blessings. They inspired me with their boldness and reminded me of what Jesus said in Matthew 19:14, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (NIV).
It’s been two years since I wrote about Lucy, who is almost seven. Now a first grader, Lucy is a sweet little girl filled with the love of Jesus. I pray she grows stronger in her faith and that her light continues to shine. I firmly believe we need more Lucys in this world.
What’s changed for me? I began working as a community engagement coordinator for a local nonprofit in February. My eighteen-month job loss softened my heart, humbled me and prepared me so I can help others. More importantly, God shifted my focus and showed me a better way to share God’s love. I am a work in progress, but I have learned it may be as simple as a smile, a hug, a listening ear, or a prayer.
I also started writing again—a talent God blessed me with at an early age. I always thought I needed to be eloquent to communicate my testimony with those around me. Now I am finding the courage to be authentic and tell my unique story. God has equipped me with the right tools; I just need to be brave enough to use them and share what I write with others!
By sharing how God shows up in my life, my hope is that I encourage someone else to keep going. This dark world needs more encouragers. May we all find ways to let our light shine through the gifts and talents God gave us.
