How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. - Psalm 104:24 (NIV)
One year when Earth Day fell on a Sunday, my husband and I attended a sermon at the local zoo. As we sat outdoors listening to the pastor preach about the Creation story in Genesis, we could see several animals in their nearby enclosures. The pastor preached on good stewardship of our planet Earth and all its creatures, while in the background a cacophony of animal noises seemed to be proclaiming, “God created us!”
When the pastor concluded his sermon, he encouraged us to visit God’s creatures at the zoo and to learn about the zoo’s conservation mission. We saw a huge variety of creatures! Moreover, we learned that many of these mammals, birds, and amphibians are endangered due to habitat loss, poaching, pollution, and climate change. We also learned about conservation efforts to save them.
That visit to a zoo on Earth Day inspired me to praise God for the wonders of creation. May we all do our part to protect the creatures God has entrusted to our care.
How is God calling me to care for creation?
