Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. - Colossians 4:6 (NIV)
I made a chocolate cake and served it for teatime, but nobody looked happy. Then I tasted it, and it was bland. My husband took one bite and declared, “You forgot the salt!” The recipe called for a quarter-teaspoon of salt, which I had omitted. Even in sweet dishes, a tiny amount of salt makes all the difference.
In a similar way, it is important to correctly season our conversations so that we can make a difference. Each conversation requires a unique approach. It is important to be gracious and encouraging as we share our thoughts and what we know with others. In Acts 17, Paul gives us a beautiful example to follow. Even though he was distressed to see all the idols in Athens, he complimented the Greek people on being very religious (see vv. 16-22). They had numerous temples dedicated to their many gods. They even had an altar to an unknown god. Paul then declared that Jesus was the God unknown to the Greeks, and he spoke about Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.
The “salt” in Paul’s words made his speech palatable, and many people wanted to hear what he was talking about. When we season what we say and do with kindness and generosity, we can help others to know Jesus.
I can help people to meet Jesus through my words.
