Then he taught me, and he said to me, “Take hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands, and you will live.” - Proverbs 4:4 (NIV)

When I was young, I wanted to be a skilled clarinetist. I was inspired by my grandfather who is a professional clarinetist. Though I took clarinet lessons, I regret not heeding his counsel to practice more. My grandfather attempted to lead me on the right path, but I wasn’t taking his wisdom or instruction as seriously as I should have. If I had, I would have become a much more knowledgeable and skilled musician.

Similarly, our heavenly Father’s words in scripture are our guide. God’s instruction is a lamp to our feet, a guide to our path. God wants to lead us on good paths and to help us to become wise. When we are sensitive to and aware of the Holy Spirit’s leading in our lives and the instruction God gives us, we can become wiser and more mature in our faith. Making it a priority to seek God’s counsel and guidance through scripture and prayer shows our obedience to and love for God as we keep God’s commandments.

Today's Prayer
