Together in the Spirit: Strengthening Emmaus Communities Across Asia

November 13, 2025 by Brittany Sky

When I stepped into the meeting space at Heavenly Grace Methodist Church in New Taipei this October, I was immediately struck by the warmth of connection. Though participants had traveled from Hong Kong, West Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, Sarawak, and the Philippines, it felt as though we were already friends—bound by our shared call to renew Christian disciples and strengthen local churches. There was an unmistakable sense that we were part of something larger than ourselves, part of God’s transforming work in the world.

Moments from Brittany’s recent journey with Emmaus
leaders around the world.

The Asia Leadership Development Event (Asia LDE) is a gathering of leaders from Emmaus Ministries communities across the continent. This year, 53 participants came together for worship, training, and fellowship, representing seven communities at different stages of growth. The purpose of the Asia LDE is simple but powerful: to equip leaders, build relationships among community members, sponsor new pilgrims, and deepen ecumenical ties that reflect the diversity and unity of Christ’s body.

As International Director, I was honored to represent The Upper Room’s programs team by offering three workshops and participating in multilingual worship services. I was deeply moved by the passion and commitment of both lay and clergy leaders who volunteer their time and energy out of love for this ministry. Every conversation—whether during training sessions or over a shared meal—reflected the same heartbeat: a desire to help others encounter God’s grace through Emmaus.

One of my favorite memories from the week was our visit to the Yang San-lang Art Museum, where we enjoyed a delicious Japanese meal together in the garden. The setting was peaceful and beautiful, and our conversations were full of laughter, gratitude, and dreams for the future of our communities.

I was especially grateful for the time spent with Chu Ming Law, our Asia Regional Representative, whose knowledge, faithfulness, and gentle leadership continue to inspire me. The Asia LDE gave me tangible evidence of what it means to be an ecumenical, interracial, and international movement—alive with the Spirit and full of hope.

As we celebrate this work across the globe, I invite you to support The GIFT Fund, which allows new Emmaus communities to be planted and to grow. Together, we are helping the Emmaus movement flourish—one faithful step at a time.
