When I was growing up in the church, adults would say to me, “Never forget who you are and whose you are. You are a child of God.” I felt so big and proud when hearing those words. Now, as a pastor, I’ve often found myself sharing those same words...
Dear God, thank you for claiming each of us as your own. What a joy it is to know that we are your children, valued and worthy of your love. As we have been clothed in Christ, we seek to exude his true character. We offer our lives to be advocates for your glory, upholding the dignity of all people and serving as your light in dark places. Amen.
In this week’s readings, individuals long for God’s grace and receive it, being transformed for service to God as a result. Psalm 42 reflects the deep longing of the soul for God’s presence, a sentiment echoed in the verses from First Kings where Elijah seeks guidance in a moment of despair. Both are revived through God’s faithfulness. In Luke’s Gospel, the healing of the man possessed by a demon showcases Jesus’ power over spiritual forces and his ability to heal and transform. Galatians emphasizes the grace given to all, transcending all backgrounds. Together, these verses highlight the human need for God’s guidance, the transformative power of faith in Christ, and the inclusive nature of God’s love and grace.
• Read Psalm 42. Consider what you find most challenging about being transparent with God. How might opening up to God deepen your relationship?
• Read 1 Kings 19:1-15a. When facing challenges or moments of uncertainty, how can you cultivate a receptive heart to better discern God’s voice?
• Read Luke 8:26-39. Reflect on a time in your life when you felt bound by something. How did encountering Jesus and his transformative power help you break free?
• Read Galatians 3:23-29. Consider the truth that in Christ, you are a child of God. What does this statement mean to you?
