Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. - John 7:24 (KJV)
During my first semester as a math professor, one student’s facial expressions and body language made it clear — at least in my mind — that she didn’t care for me or my teaching style. Her demeanor made teaching that class less enjoyable, and I was relieved when the semester ended.
Then an email arrived in my inbox and changed everything. It was from the student, explaining that she suffered from extreme math anxiety and had feared my class would prevent her from graduating. What I had mistaken for dislike was actually fear and self-doubt. She told me I was the best math professor she had ever had and that my teaching not only helped her pass but gave her a true understanding of the subject.
That simple email had an immeasurable impact on me. What I had perceived as resistance from her was actually silent struggle. Her kind words lifted my spirits in ways she could never have imagined, and they have stayed with me.
This experience made me reflect on how often we misjudge others, assuming the worst when that person may be carrying a burden we cannot see. I was reminded of the importance of extending grace, rather than making assumptions. My student showed me that even the smallest acts of kindness can leave an impact that lasts a lifetime.
God can use my acts of kindness to make a big difference.
