Some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to [Jesus], “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.” - Matthew 12:38 (NIV)

Many years ago, I participated in a Christian small group. I shared with them that I was struggling to discern God’s will for my life. Often I said all I wanted was a billboard from God with instructions so that I could do as God desired. We all laughed and agreed that it would be amazing if it were that simple.

Also during this time, my elderly mother fell and wounded her leg. She needed to see a wound-care specialist, but most specialists were an hour or more away from her home. On the three-hour drive home from visiting her one day, I wondered aloud to my husband how we might find someone near my mother. Then I noticed a billboard alongside the highway advertising, “For wound care, see the specialist at . . . ” with a phone number. This person was practicing at my mom’s local hospital. Imagine my surprise and gratitude to see a billboard with the exact information I needed on it!

Since then I’ve continued to receive God’s guidance in my life but in more subtle ways than on roadside signs. Praying, reading scripture, and staying open to God’s leading helps us pay attention to the creative ways God works for our good.
