Love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. - Romans 12:10 (NRSVUE)

Two of our five grandchildren live close enough that my wife and I are often blessed to have them sitting around our table at mealtimes. My wife is a true servant, and it is difficult to anticipate needs before she does. But sometimes when one of the grandchildren needs a refill of their milk glass, Donna and I try to help at the same time. The granddaughters observe our jostling to be the first to serve them and shout, “Milk fight!” This is their way of expressing how we are trying to outdo each other in being helpful.

This has caused me to wonder: How often do I serve those outside my family with the same kind of zeal? Jesus showed us a true servant’s heart when he washed the feet of his disciples, but he also served those outside of his circle of friends. He fed the multitudes, healed the sick, ate with tax collectors, and showed care and respect to those without social standing in many other ways during his ministry.

From now on, every time I hear my grandchildren call, “Milk fight!” it will serve as a reminder that there are so many others that I can serve. When we strive to outdo one another in service, we can honor Christ who always put others ahead of himself, even unto death on the cross.

Today's Prayer
Dear Father, thank you for opportunities to serve others. Help us to cultivate the spirit of servanthood your Son modeled for us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
