Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. - Galatians 6:2 (NIV)

A few years ago, we drove nearly sixty miles to see an outdoor performance of the passion of Christ. About forty-five minutes into our journey, our car began to make a horrible noise. Despite being in a remote area, we were able to coast into the parking lot of a small church as our car sputtered to a stop and then refused to start. We were stuck.

We soon met the pastor and his family who lived next door to the church. They were very kind and helpful and assured us that we could leave our car in the church parking lot for as long as we needed.

I decided to call a colleague who lived close by and asked if we could get a ride home or borrow a car long enough to make it home. In her kindness, my friend and her husband brought us one of their cars, insisting we borrow it for as long as we needed.

These acts of kindness by my friend and a stranger provided us the support we needed in our time of distress. When we experience unexpected challenges — a broken car or something much more devastating like a broken relationship — Paul reminds us that we have an opportunity to do good. May we notice those in need around us so that we can help carry another’s burdens.

Today's Prayer
Dear Lord, help us to see the people around us who need to experience your love. Use our simple acts of kindness to brighten someone’s day. Amen.
