Valerie Bryant Bennett (Tennessee, USA)
For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. - Psalm 62:1 (NRSVUE)
The magnificent Tennessee Theatre opened in my city in 1928 and has since been painstakingly restored to its original opulence. It is one of my favorite places to watch plays and musical performances.
At each performance, there is always a short space of time when I, along with the rest of the audience, sit silently in complete darkness, waiting for the curtain to rise. Yet I know there is a flurry of activity backstage. When the curtain rises, stage lights reveal a detailed, colorful scene — the results of hours of preparation and rehearsals.
For the past two years, I have been in a very difficult situation. Each morning during my devotional time, I have asked God to somehow resolve the situation and bring peace. I know that God hears my prayers and loves me, but God hasn’t resolved the situation yet. I feel as though I am sitting in the vast darkness of the theater, waiting. Lately, I’ve been reminding myself that God is working “behind the curtain.”
Romans 8:28 reassures us that God is working for good for those who love God, and we can trust that one day soon, the curtain will rise, and we will see the results of our prayers and God’s plans.
I can trust in God’s goodness, even when I have to wait.
