If you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him. - Matthew 7:11 (CEB)
I have recently become a mother. While there is so much beauty in this journey, being a parent is hard work! Often the lack of sleep, endless chores, and new responsibilities leave me feeling overwhelmed and inadequate. Through parenthood, despite my own weaknesses, God — the one perfect parent — has given me a powerful picture of God’s character and love for me.
While I groan at being awakened at 4 a.m. by the cries of my daughter, I can take heart knowing that God delights to hear from me at any time for any reason. When I am groggy and grumpy from lack of sleep, I can rejoice that God doesn’t need sleep and is keenly attentive to me. When I struggle to understand the reason for my daughter’s tears, I know that my perfect Father knows my needs before I do.
My love for my daughter pales in comparison to the love that my heavenly Father has for us. This is a truth that we can rest in. Children can make mistakes, grow, cry, and flourish without losing the steadfast love of their parents. How much more secure are we in God’s care.
God is eager to hear from me and to lavish love on me.
