I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. - Psalm 40:1 (NIV)
I had suddenly lost my job and, with bills piling up and a diminishing sense of self-worth, I was overwhelmed with anxiety. I wanted immediate answers, solutions that would take away my problems. Desperate, I turned to prayer. Then I came upon Psalm 37:7 — “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.” Be still? Wait patiently? Impossible! Yet something inside me whispered, Try it.
Initially, it was unbearable, but over time, remarkable things happened. The knot of anxiety in my chest loosened and was replaced by a sense of trust I hadn’t felt before. I dedicated at least ten minutes a day to quiet reflection, creating space to connect with God. Writing down my prayers helped me focus my thoughts. I’d list three things I was thankful for, shifting my mindset toward gratitude. And I connected with a faith community for encouragement and spiritual support. Collectively, these habits brought me peace, clarity, and success.
The psalms help me trust God’s timing and relinquish control. Looking back, my season of waiting was not a waste. Those months prepared me in ways I couldn’t have foreseen. Scripture reminds us that God’s ways lead us to outcomes far better than we can imagine. Waiting is transformative as patience refines our character and deepens our reliance on God.
Spiritual practices help me to be still and trust God.
