All creatures look to you to give them their food at the proper time. - Psalm 104:27 (NIV)

The smell of delicious roast chicken filled the house as my son and I sat down to eat. By our feet, our dog gazed up at us. Despite desperately wanting our chicken, she never jumped up or tried to snatch it. Previous experience had taught her that sitting still was more likely to get her what she wanted. But she also trusted that when the time came, we would provide her with the food she needed.

We often do the exact opposite. We want something right there and then. Instead of waiting patiently for God to give us what we need, we demand to have it now. Unfortunately, this desire sometimes leads us into disobedience.

If my dog can trust me to feed her, surely I can trust God to give me what I need. As Psalm 104 tells us, God provides food for creatures at the proper time. So how much more will God provide for me? I may have other ideas about what is the proper time, but God knows much better than I do. All I have to do is be obedient and wait, knowing that God will give me what I need.

Today's Prayer
Dear God, help us to be patient and obedient, knowing that you will provide what we need. Amen.
