After the disciples had gathered around [Paul], he got up and went back into the city. - Acts 14:20 (NIV)
After total hip-replacement surgery, I spent several hours in recovery, but then I was told it was time to get up and walk. I was taken aback! I assumed it’d be days before I could walk, but the nurses explained that walking right away is crucial to prevent stiffness and weakness in the new joint. With a nurse on either side of me, I took my first steps. Thanks to their support I returned home that same day with more strength and less pain in my hip.
In today’s reading Paul has been beaten unconscious and dragged out of the city by a hostile crowd. Though he appears lifeless, he isn’t alone. Paul is surrounded by a group of disciples who help him get back on his feet. Forming a circle of support, they bear witness to God’s power, and it’s by this power that Paul re-enters the city that very day and continues his travels the next. It was crucial for Paul to get up again to continue spreading the good news of Jesus Christ.
When life’s challenges wound us, it’s easy to stay down. The longer we’re down, the harder it is to move forward in life. However, God meets us in these moments and extends the grace we need to get up again. We experience this grace through the support of those around us who are attentive to our hurts and compassionate in our times of need. Together we help each other get up again to continue the work God has called us to do.
I am extending God’s grace when I offer my support.
