My Red Bag

I have always carried a red tote bag when I visit my grandchildren, and they know that bag holds snacks and special activities. Now that my grandchildren are six and eight, they run to meet me when I pull into the driveway. The first thing they do is look in the bag. It warms my heart, and it has become a sweet tradition. But recently I said with a smile, “I hope you don’t just love me for my snacks.”

When I think of my holy Father who generously sends provision and blessings, it’s easy to be thankful. But as I give thanks for what God does, do I remember to offer praise for who God is? Psalm 145 reminds me that God is trustworthy, righteous, gracious, and compassionate.

Sometimes we have hard seasons. We may be waiting for answers. Discouragement can cause us to feel like God no longer brings blessings to us. In those times, do I still praise God spontaneously and passionately? I am reminded to be deliberate about praise. I love all the “goodies,” but I love the Giver of good gifts even more (see Jas. 1:17).
