Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go; give the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress. - Psalm 71:3 (NIV)
Have you ever pondered: Where is my refuge? Or maybe, what is my refuge? Or even, who is my refuge?
Sometimes a refuge is a place. When a devastating ice storm hit my community, we were without power in below-freezing temperatures for four days. Thankfully, my neighbors had a generator and invited me to join them in the warmth of their house. Their home was my refuge.
Sometimes a refuge is an activity. My sister plays golf to offset the stress of work. Spending time on the golf course is a refuge for her.
Sometimes a refuge is the people who show us love and support. My spiritual resilience group meets every other week to share joys, sorrows, questions, fears, and thoughts. These people are a refuge for me — a place free of judgment and rich in understanding and compassion.
But our best refuge is God.
God is always ready and available to be our refuge, offering us hope, strength, and renewal when we need it most.
In all situations, I will turn to God, my refuge.
