Pay attention to what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and it will be added to you. - Mark 4:24 (NRSVUE)

I used to wonder what it was like to hear God’s voice. I had heard so many people talk about how God spoke to them; I was curious. Did God have a masculine voice? Did God thunder loudly among lightning flashes or speak quietly? When God finally talked to me, would people nearby hear God’s voice too? Eventually, I got frustrated when I still had not heard God’s voice, and I wondered if others were doing something that I wasn’t.

After a while, I began to seek God genuinely — not to satisfy my curiosity but because I was tired of hearing about God from others. I wanted to know God for myself. And when I began to study God’s word in earnest, I began to hear God’s voice.

It didn’t come as I expected, and it came along different channels. First, it was in the pages of scripture. The words seemed like they were written just for me. Then as I began to draw closer and spend more time in God’s presence, God began speaking to my heart too. That voice is like a gentle rush of water and always brings a sense of peace. This experience has strengthened my faith and my walk with God.
