The light of the eyes rejoices the heart, and good news refreshes the body. - Proverbs 15:30 (NRSVUE)

I was making my way to the checkout line at the grocery store, pleased there was only one person in front of me. When it was my turn, the cashier said to me, “Thank you for smiling at me when you got into line. I never see anyone smile in this line, so thank you.”

I was not conscious of my countenance, and I had not even said a word. But as people come through this cashier’s line each day, she is paying attention to their expressions and demeanor. Her comment left an impression on my heart and mind that I hope not to forget.

We had a brief conversation, and I learned her granddaughter has a learning disability and struggles in school. I promised her I would pray for her granddaughter. Now when I go to the grocery store, I try to get in this cashier’s line to see how she and her granddaughter are doing and let her know I continue to pray for her.

That initial encounter made me realize that as we engage people throughout our day we are leaving an impression, even if we don’t say a word. In fact, the only gospel some people ever encounter may be you and me.

Today's Prayer
Dear Lord, help us to be sensitive to what others are dealing with and to offer them encouragement. Amen.
