No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. - Matthew 6:24 (NIV)
It’s not every day that you find a gift of fresh fish right outside your house. But there they were. I had been fretting about not having enough money, but through those fish, it was as if God were saying, “See? I can provide for your needs, so why worry?”
I was reminded of Matthew 6:25-34, and my mind was put at ease for a time. But eventually I was caught in another whirlwind of worries. That’s when God pointed me to a deeper truth: I had been putting my trust in money, not in God.
In Matthew 6:24, Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters. . . . You cannot serve both God and money.” At first I couldn’t accept that money was my master, but as I thought about it, I knew it was true. Despite having a stable job and some savings, I still worried. I focused on money, losing sight of who God is and how God has consistently provided.
I’m grateful God steered my focus back to God and reminded me of God’s generous provision (see Matt. 7:11). God is my great reward, my all in all (see Gen. 15:1). And God is more than enough.
No amount of riches compares to the treasure of my relationship with God.
