Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests. - Luke 2:14 (NIV)
As evening approached, my spirit and eyelids drooped as the hurry and blur of holiday preparations took their toll. I had been joyfully anticipating the Christmas Eve candlelight service at my church. However, the darkness of the shorter winter day and a bone-chilling cold snap made me want to stay at home under a blanket. Although I was fading fast, I decided to leave early for church before I lost my motivation.
Once at church, I helped set out food for the hospitality hour. I wondered if attendance would be low due to the cold and the pull of holiday duties. I sat down in the front row of the empty church, feeling satisfied that I had managed to make it to the evening service despite my tiredness.
Wonder and joy overtook me as the first hymn resounded with booming, exuberant praise for our Savior! I turned around and saw pews overflowing with people — families, visitors, and friends. My flagging spirit was uplifted at the sight and sound! All of us were gathered to celebrate the mystery of the Christ child. As we joined in praise, celebration, and fellowship, our Lord and Savior refreshed our spirits.
When I am weak, the Lord is strong.
