Jesus said, “Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.” - John 4:14 (NIV)
As I awoke in the predawn, I felt blessed to be lying beside my sleeping husband. I reflected on the special moments of our 62 years of marriage. We shared the joys of our wedding day and the births of three children. But we also shared our pain: crying together over the death of our infant daughter and the heartache we shared when our sons faced challenges. The highs and lows of our life together create a tapestry that covers and blesses our lives.
As is my habit when I wake early, I turned to scripture I have memorized. I thought about the story of Ruth. Boaz’s kind words and offering of water caught my attention. It brought to mind Jesus’ response to the Samaritan woman: “Whoever drinks from the water that I will give will never be thirsty again. The water that I give will become in those who drink it a spring of water that bubbles up into eternal life” (Jn. 4:14, CEB). The water Jesus spoke of refers to the Holy Spirit (see Jn. 7:37-39).
This gave me peace and assurance that God’s Spirit will support us through whatever lies ahead. There will surely be more challenges and more tears. But I know deep in my heart that God will quench my thirst.
I can endure life’s challenges because the Holy Spirit sustains me.
