Jesus said, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” - Matthew 28:19 (NIV)
When an overseas missionary came to speak at our church, I was reminded of my own short-term mission trips to Liberia over 10 years ago. In my heart, I long to serve overseas as that missionary does. But my husband is a pastor in the United States, and he reminds me that we have our own mission field right here.
Today’s scripture reading from James teaches me that serving God doesn’t have to be some grand life event, a long-term overseas missionary commitment, or even short-term mission trips. We are simply called to serve. So I am trying to show the love of God in my everyday moments: choosing to be present with my children instead of using my electronic devices; visiting with an elderly neighbor even when I have a sink full of dishes; sharing my love and my musical gifts with our church.
Whether I am overseas or right here at home, I am sharing the love of God through my relationships with others. Although I may eventually return to Liberia, I am seeking contentment where God has placed me right now.
God can use me wherever I am.
