Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’” - Luke 14:16-17 (NIV)
I love to watch the birds from my kitchen window. After refilling the feeder one day, I watched as a single bird arrived, grabbed a seed and flew off through the left side of the yard. Moments later, he returned, grabbed another seed, and flew off again. Within minutes, the bird returned a third time and with him, all kinds of different birds arrived and shared a meal together. It looked like the first bird had sent out an invitation to all the neighborhood to come to the table.
In the Bible, a table is a meeting place where God is present, and God’s people gather. For Christians, t
he Table represents the life and work of Jesus, reminding us that through the sacrament of Communion, we are marked as people of the New Covenant. In Jesus we are loved by God and welcomed to the Table just as we are. As followers of Christ, we are charged to extend an invitation to others in his name.
Christ sets a table and invites everyone to come.
