Encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. - 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NIV)
When I was sick with pneumonia six years ago, my daughter-in-law Carol became my caregiver. She is a medical doctor and decided to take time off to care for me in the hospital and later at home. Recently I had cataract surgery, and again she nursed me back to health. Not only does Carol have the knowledge and skill as a doctor, but she also has an incredible amount of patience. Above all, she is a woman of deep faith. Our love for each other and our faith in Jesus Christ strengthen our bond even more.
This reminds me of the beautiful relationship between Ruth and Naomi in the Bible. Naomi’s steadfast faith and love for God and Ruth’s commitment to Naomi brought them closer together. Through tragedy, they held on to faith and each other as they made their way back to Judah for a fresh start. (See Ruth 1.)
Relationships within families are special and complex. While they can bring much joy, they can also bring challenges. Our faith can be a powerful source of sustenance during trying times. Our relationships and love for God can help us to navigate challenges and to cherish moments of joy.
Relationships are a gift from God.
