Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. - Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)

Before I started watching hummingbirds, I assumed that the experience would be a calming, peaceful one. Shortly after hanging a feeder outside my window, I realized how naïve I had been! These tiny “engines with wings” are territorial and spend much of their energy aggressively chasing and attacking any other hummingbird that dares approach. It’s embarrassing to admit, but I can’t help scolding them through the window: “There’s enough nectar for all of you! You don’t have to fight over it! Each of you can take a spot on the feeder and all will be fed!”

But isn’t that the way of the world? Across the globe, daily headlines are rife with stories of war, political scheming, oppression, and intolerance. We live in a world constantly in conflict and disunion. It’s easy to become weary. We long for restoration, for healing, for justice, and for peace.

The good news is that in the mysterious promise of Christ’s return, we will find it all. From Genesis to Revelation, scripture proclaims that our Lord will have final victory over all creation. When conflict threatens to overwhelm us, we can rest in that assurance and try to relax. What a powerful and wonderful hope we have in Jesus!

Today's Prayer
God of peace, when we are weighed down by the turmoil of this world, help us to remember that you have already given us perfect and lasting peace through Jesus Christ. Amen.
