Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him. - Hosea 6:3 (NIV)
I know my husband. I know his likes and dislikes, the food he prefers, his favorite authors. I know his way of thinking, his hopes, what saddens his heart, what makes him laugh. I know my husband because I am close to him. If I were distant and did not listen to him each day, I would not learn his preferences or worries. Even if I have the slightest doubt, I feel confident enough to approach him and ask him directly. He loves me sincerely, and I know he would follow through with an explanation to assuage my doubts.
It is the same with God. If I do not draw near to God and am not attentive to God each day, I will not recognize God’s voice. I will not know what is pleasing or displeasing to God. I would question if what I am doing is acceptable; I would not know what God feels for me. But even in my uncertainty, I know I can approach God with confidence and God will answer. I can know God’s will because I listen to God’s word. I know of God’s love because I live in the warmth of God’s shelter.
Each day is an opportunity to grow closer to God.
