Toward the Mark

The verse “I press toward the mark” (Phil. 3:14) has stayed with me—not just as a scripture to meditate on, but as a living truth I see unfolding in my sons’ lives. A year has passed since I wrote that devotion, yet the message keeps showing up in my sons’ swimming, schoolwork, soccer, and every challenge they face. Pressing toward the mark has become their daily rhythm.

Every day brings something new to overcome and to grow through, but they face it with God’s plan in mind. Before school, before practice, before the hard moments, they pray. They read God’s word. They ask God for direction, for wisdom, for the strength to treat others the way God desires. The “pressing” isn’t just about swimming faster—it’s about drawing closer to Jesus. That is the real mark.

I see them working hard. I see them showing up to practice even when they’re tired. I see them studying when it would be easier to quit. They’re giving their best to what God has placed in their hands. But the greatest joy isn’t their effort—it’s their growth. I see their relationship with Jesus deepening. I see their love for others expanding. I see their hearts becoming more like Christ’s.

Pressing toward the mark is not only about achievement. It’s about becoming. It’s about letting God shape their character, their choices, and their future. And as they keep pressing, God keeps guiding. God keeps strengthening. God keeps growing the seed he planted in them.

May we all press toward the mark with that same steady faith—trusting that every step, every effort, every prayer is shaping us into who God designed us to be.
