Out of Order

May 20, 2026 by Sue Newby (Texas, USA)

Since retiring, my morning routine is walking two to three miles with my Dalmatian, Emma, showering, then reading The Upper Room and spending time in prayer.

One Saturday morning after our walk, I started working around the house and did not follow my usual routine, showering later in the day. For some reason I was grumpy toward my husband and let small things get under my skin. It didn’t dawn on me until the next morning before I got ready for church, when I sat down to read The Upper Room, that I had not read my Upper Room from the previous day.

I realized that starting the day with God’s word and praying gives me a better start to the day and helps me not to let those small things get under my skin. When this does happen, I can reflect on my lesson from earlier in the day to get through it. Starting the day with God’s word starts the day off right.
