I was inspired to write this meditation this spring when I found a couple stones that rose out of the soil in my yard in the shape of hearts. I have heard it said many times that everyone has a seat at the table and has a story that needs to be heard. I started a small group that would meet weekly with some people from church using The Upper Room. As we began to meet and become familiar with each other, I asked everyone in the group to take time and prepare their story of how, why, and when they came to Christ and share it amongst us.
Each story was compelling—some were short and some lengthy, some were very detailed and some were not. After everyone shared their story, it was evident to each of us that the condition of our hearts was hard as stone before we came to Christ. Each of us had a heart of stone that needed to be softened in order to see how God could work through us. By the mercy and grace of God our hearts were touched and softened.
I am reminded of how important it is each day to recognize and examine the condition of my heart and if it is not right and to ask God to create in me a clean heart and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
