No Quick Fixes

March 1, 2026 by Lindsay Gray

We boast in the hope of the glory of God . . .
because we know that suffering produces perseverance;
perseverance,
character; and character, hope.

— Romans 5:2-4 (NIV)

So much of modern life seems to be about finding speedy solutions to problems. Skincare products or dietary supplements promise life-changing results. Online stores deliver countless products within 24 hours. Artificial intelligence systems give us quick answers. We want what we want, and we want it now!

But there are no quick fixes to the human condition. As much as we dislike hardship and discomfort, they are parts of life. I think this is one of the lessons that Lent offers us. Life was not easy or smooth even for the Son of God. Jesus experienced hunger and temptation; he got tired; he grieved the death of a friend. Jesus lived as a human being and knows our hardships. Because of this we are never alone.

In this issue, writers share stories of hardships that have no quick or easy solutions, but faith in Christ helps them to persevere. Their stories show us how we might face our own challenges. We can show compassion to others especially when we need compassion ourselves. We can imitate Jesus’ humble leadership, caring for those around us even when society scorns such action. We can have patience, allowing time for God’s purpose to take shape in our lives. We can trust that difficulty can lead to meaningful growth.

We are keenly aware of the challenges that come with being human as we walk with Jesus through the wilderness toward the Cross. There is no shortcut through these 40 days. But as followers of Christ, we hold on to hope and look with anticipation to the promise of Resurrection as Easter morning dawns once again.
