When I wrote the press release for my government agency, the National Park Service, I thought it was written well enough to be sent to the press and other parks for readers to see. When I asked one of my employees to review it, I was grateful he provided the necessary edits before sending the press release out. Ever since then, I had someone edit my press releases and educational materials. I served as a ranger in seven national parks during my career, as well as in a regional office, where I facilitated the education programs and public outreach for parks in the Southeastern United States.

I am now retired from the government. Along with exercise, travel, and spending time with my wife, I have written two books and am working on a third. One of the books is about nature, highlighting my experiences as a ranger, and the other is about running marathons. Both books relate the stories to scripture.

I still rely on editors. I have two editors who look over my work. Their thorough and honest review has helped shape my writings. When I send my work to them, I may disagree with their review at first. But after a while, I understand their corrections and feedback. I am thankful for their clarity and the sound editorial advice. When someone asks me, “What does it take to be a good writer?” My first reply (and most writers would agree) is “have good editors.” They see things in my writing that I don’t see, and they offer suggestions that convey what I want to say in even more meaningful ways.

Having editors review and refine my writing has reminded me that I need to have a consistent spiritual review of my words, thoughts, and actions. While I think I’m doing fine in my Christian walk, in my mind and deep down in my heart, I know there are some things I should change. I just need to ask the Holy Spirit for guidance and listen to what he says. A thorough examination by the Holy Spirit has been very helpful in rooting out anything unhealthy and harmful. It certainly has helped me to have an “editorial” review from the Holy Spirit.

If you get the opportunity, please visit any of our national parks in America or national parks in other countries. They are beautiful! One of the photos included is from my days as a park ranger. The other is my wife, Kimberly, and I on a trip to one of America’s national parks.

Make it a great day, everyone!
