More from Tomeka B. Scales

October 31, 2025 by Tomeka B. Scales (Maryland, USA)

What does it mean to enjoy the journey? I wrestled with this concept when I was driving my parents somewhere. I—the one who is in constant prayer for patience—was in such a rush to get to our destination. Could I beat the GPS time, even by one minute? Let’s find out!

Then I heard my parents proclaim in amazement that there are so many beautiful things in nature that you miss when you are in the driver’s seat with tunnel vision on the destination. While I was in a rush to conclude the journey, my parents were in awe of the journey—the small things in their surroundings such as the animals grazing, the waves hitting the shore, and people sitting outside soaking up the sun’s rays.

It made me think about how much I was missing out on by intensely focusing on the destination. Something that appeared to be as minor as driving down the road was a teachable moment for me to appreciate the things that I so often overlooked.

And this appreciation does not just come from fun, light-hearted times. Sometimes the journey brings headache and heartache. Sometimes it brings tears and anxiety. Sometimes it is exhausting and lonely. However, the journey can also bring strength and perspective. It can bring healing. It can provide preparation for what’s ahead. It can result in a testimony to help others.

Each of us is on a journey. We don’t know how long it will be or what’s ahead. However, we have the power to decide whether to appreciate or disparage the journey. Which will you choose?

Sincerely,
Tomeka
