God has always gotten my attention by plopping friends down in the middle of my path! Vivian was one of those people. Due to her failing eyesight, she stopped teaching Sunday school and insisted that I take her place. I felt totally inadequate, but I honored her request and found my spiritual voice through the lessons I shared.
She and I had many conversations about the Bible, and she showed me how she used the margins in the large print edition of The Upper Room to write her daily prayers. I still write my prayers in the margins of The Upper Room just like she did.
By the time her health failed, Vivian had lost her husband and two of her three children. Excruciating back pain complicated her misery, but she always smiled at me. How helpless I felt! Yet my helplessness opened my heart to feel what total trust in God is! God knew I needed to see him in Vivian. And I did. Who needs to see God in you?
