November 5: Be Confident
1. Where do you lack confidence in your abilities? Why? How do you push yourself to get out of your comfort zone?
2. When have you experienced a barrier while trying to minister to someone? What was the barrier? What was the outcome of your efforts?
3. Describe a time when you felt the Holy Spirit at work in spite of your feelings of insufficiency. How do you know the Spirit was at work in that situation?
4. How do you relate to Moses in the story of the burning bush? Who else in scripture do you relate to when God leads you to do something you aren’t sure you can do?
5. How does your church encourage you to remain open and willing to serve God in whatever way God calls you? How will you encourage others to accept God’s call?
November 12: Grace in Sorrow
1. When have you felt surrounded by grief? How did this experience change the way you deal with grief?
2. Why do you think grief can teach us so much? What is the most meaningful lesson grief has taught you about God? What has it taught you about yourself and others?
3. Today’s writer says there are depths of sorrow no human comfort can reach. Is there any sorrow God’s comfort cannot reach? How do you commune with God when you are experiencing profound sorrow?
4. What does it mean to you that you cannot store up God’s grace for tomorrow? Do you find it encouraging or discouraging that you cannot store up grace for future needs? Why?
5. What scripture passages remind you of God’s comfort and grace in times of grief? How do you use these verses when you are experiencing painful situations?
November 19: The Appropriate Time
1. When have you tried to get ahead in life, only to realize your efforts were in vain? What did this teach you about trying to get ahead?
2. Why do you think it often seems that others are moving ahead faster than we are? How do you feel when you see others seeming to move faster than you? How do you trust God’s timing in these moments?
3. Recall a time when your plans did not move ahead as quickly or in the direction that you had hoped. What happened? How did you respond?
4. What spiritual practices and scripture passages help you to work at your own pace? How do you avoid worrying about what others are doing and focus on your calling from God?
5. Who in your life serves as an example of following God’s path without worrying whether others are going faster? How does their example inspire you to move forward in a similar way?
November 26: God’s Surprises
1. When have you observed a plant or something else in nature growing in an unexpected way? What did this teach you about the natural world? What did it teach you about God?
2. Do you enjoy the happy surprises nature provides? Why or why not? What is your favorite surprise from nature?
3. When have you carefully planned something that didn’t work out? What did God have in store for you instead? Did you have an easy or hard time embracing God’s plan?
4. Do you generally like surprises or not? Why? Do you feel
differently about surprises from God? What helps you rejoice in the surprises God gives you?
5. Who in scripture cultivated joy despite facing disappointments? How did they do so? What can you learn from their story?
