Recently a friend of mine sent me a short video which touched me very much. It was of an elderly woman with Alzheimer’s disease. At first she was utterly passive, lost somewhere deep within herself. But as her caregiver began to gently touch her cheeks and to sing “Jesus Loves Me, This I Know” a miracle enfolded. The woman slowly but surely began to sing with her caregiver. Somewhere deep in her soul she was stirred, and her heart joined in joy.
Truly we are made to worship God, made in God’s very image. And even when we lose many of our intellectual abilities and physical capacities, I believe the ability to worship God—indeed, the very need—remains and brings healing when we do worship God. And our heavenly Father looks down at us and says to himself, “These are my sheep,” and smiles.
