Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit.
— Acts 2:3-4 (NRSVUE)
No matter where we look, we can find messages telling us we are not enough. Advertisements proclaim the wonders of products that will improve our lives. Self-help books instruct us on ways to be better leaders, parents, or spouses. Social media posts suggest life hacks that will make daily chores simpler and our lives picture-perfect. With all these messages swirling around, no wonder it is often difficult for us to believe that God already loves us — just as we are!
By sending the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, God demonstrated clearly that each person is valuable and worthy of grace. They did not need to change at all to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
In this issue, writers describe some of the many ways God demonstrates deep, unconditional, unchanging love for us. In cancer diagnoses, failed entrance exams, and other life-altering experiences, God is present. God’s love for us does not depend on anything we do or leave undone. The gift of grace assures us that we are enough — just as we are. Let us live in a way that gives thanks for this most precious gift!
