Writing about my only religious experiences when I was young reminded me of where I saw those Christian comic books. We lived in a very small town and there was only one church. Our neighbor took me to Sunday school there a few times. My Sunday school class was held in the furnace room in the basement of the church. A man came down with a pile of Christian comic books, laid them on a table, and left. He never came back to teach or explain. The church was very small and apparently didn’t have anyone qualified to teach a class of six-year-olds. So they did the best they could, and I’ve always remembered those stories of the Bible “heroes.”
Now I know that there really are Bible heroes—men and women who are missionaries, teachers, helpers, and music leaders who bring God’s word to the rest of us ordinary people.
In Christ, I believe that all of God’s “ordinary” children are really extraordinary, even if the only thing some of us can do is to pray and speak of Jesus to our family and friends. After all, we are God’s own people, a royal priesthood and not ordinary at all.
